Quiet Luxury in Design
We all have heard this term in the media, and if you haven’t Quiet Luxury is the new modern version of “Old Money” . As a designer living in Denver, Colorado, I think of it in a less pretentious way and love the idea of everyday luxury. Design is also in the details, and there are very affordable ways to elevate your daily routine. Life is short, we need self care and now is the time to take inventory of all those little things that make you joyful and content. Avoid burn-out, treat yourself. No need to break the bank.
When we finish a renovation or style a project, we step back from the big picture [the design] and start building the emotional connection to the overall design. Although I love all aspects of my job, this is the part I get very excited about because there are no set rules, and it’s a fully personal and creative process. A lot of the final details we bring are the obvious decor layers, such as art, lighting accessories, rugs and room decor. Quiet luxury are all the small treats that make you smile of feel special when you come home. Whether it’s after a long work day or during a lazy weekend, your home should be full of the tiny details that make it such a haven.
I’ll share some of my favorites, most of which I try to bring into my own home or give as gifts to my family and friends who would not do it for themselves.
You mom said it: make your bed! One of the joys and comfort of ending the day is getting into a nicely made bed, with fresh linens, pillows to your liking and pretty colors that you love. Invest in some high thread-count or Percale sheets and a good down alternative blanket. Layer with a coverlet and feel like you’re in a boutique hotel room.
Buy glasses and tableware you LOVE. We eat and drink everyday and it is a very high return on investment. The right wine glass, the perfect bowl for your grapes, the beautiful plates for dinner, even if it’s at the kitchen counter. Wait to buy the pieces you covet or thrift them! Mixing and matching can also be a nice way to have fun with quality table and bar ware.
Buy fresh flowers! Of course if you’re lucky to have a floral shop near you like we do (The twisted Tulip in Cherry Creek North https://thetwistedtulip.com/) The market also has a wide range of very affordable fresh cut flowers to choose from. We pick up what looks good that day and build bouquets at home. You can also forage for foliage or branches and flow with the season.
Scents are the door to memories and if you want to have that olfactory treat in your home, look for a non-toxic candle, essential oils difusers or incense. Its hould be subtle and completely for you! Mine is a pipe tobacco which reminds me of my dad when I was a little girl.
Elevate the mundane: bring back the candy dishes with your sweet or chocolate of choice, nuts or doggy treats! Ditch the big plastic mouth wash bottle and pour it into a decanter of pretty bottle. You probably have a crystal or glass heirloom you never use anyway. You can choose the color of mouth wash that fits your style and decor: amber, blue, clear etc… Match it with a cool bar lowball or shot glass for more luxe.
Use cloth napkins. Tha’s all.
Add dimmers in most rooms in the house. You can control the intensity and the mood of the lighting and it makes such a difference.
Have humidifiers in bedrooms. Denver people IYKYK.
A soft and beautiful throw to cuddle while reading or watching a movie
Always keep fresh thick good quality towels. Life is short, don’t use the musty beige-y towel with pulled threads or stains. Donate old towels to the animal shelter or keep them for chores. You deserve a nice soft towel!
