Color Drenching
Interior designers have been doing it on the sly for a long time. In fact, in Antiquity color drenching was a thing. So, what is the fuss about?
Color drenching is a design practice that consist in painting every surface in the room in the same color or close color palette: walls, ceiling and trim (sometimes matching the flooring if you dare !). This may feel like a very big commitment and many prefer to stick to white shades for the ceiling and trim. What we love about this choice is that it actually simplifies the color selection and counters decision fatigue. It gives any room a strong identity and a feeling of instant coziness. Color drenching is also a great way to give your space a sophisticated look, effortlessly.
In Denver, as in the mountains, we are lucky to get incredibly bright sunshine which affords us great light. But no matter where you are, you should not be afraid of color. The good news? Color Drenching is beautiful with light and neutral colors as well.
Should you do it? Well as we Interior designers say, it’s just paint! Before you try it consider these guidelines:
DO pick your decor and furniture before choosing the color.
DO use different sheens on the walls and trim for texture and interest.
DO use color drenching in rooms that call for an intimate feeling like dining room, powder rooms or bedrooms and library.
DO add contrast here and there with a statement piece of furniture or art.
DON’T color drench if you have a real open floor plan. This technique calls for delimited spaces, arches or doorways.
DON’T be afraid to go dark. Deep and moody hues look amazing when applied all over!
